Virginia began requiring the registration of births and deaths at the county level in 1853. While citizens did not always comply with the requirement, many births and deaths were recorded in Rockbridge County, including the births and deaths of enslaved people. This spreadsheet covers the years 1864 to 1886.

Notes on Data

• The death register does not include deaths for 1863, and the deaths for 1864 and 1865 show all Black people as "free."
• For the years 1864 and 1865 most of the deaths of Black people identified the person providing the information as "Employer." For enslaved people that meant the person who owned them - for free people those who did employ them.
